Growing Together: The Story of Shara Community Gardens
Shara Community Gardens was created to bring people together through growing food, sharing knowledge and building a welcoming space for connection. Local residents sought a place where people of all ages could learn about sustainability, form meaningful relationships and enjoy a shared garden that benefits the entire neighbourhood. The gardens continue to reflect this original purpose: a community-led space where learning, participation and belonging are encouraged.
The vision for Shara Community Gardens is to cultivate a thriving, inclusive and educational environment that supports community wellbeing, sustainability and local food production. The garden focuses on maintaining accessible growing spaces, offering hands-on learning opportunities and hosting activities that strengthen community ties. Efforts are ongoing to expand participation, increase access to fresh produce and provide inviting spaces where children, families and volunteers can connect with nature.
Events such as Christmas in the Gardens and Community Working Bees continue to support in bringing the community together:
Christmas in the Gardens
The annual Christmas in the Gardens celebration has become a highlight for local families, and last year’s event welcomed approximately 100 people. This event is set to take place on Saturday 13 December and will feature live music, children’s activities, a visit from Santa and a collaboration with the Fastest Runner on Clifford St race.
Community Working Bees and Workshops
Regular volunteer working bees and workshops have provided opportunities for new and experienced gardeners alike to build confidence, learn practical skills and deepen their connection to the community. These sessions play a key role in maintaining the gardens and fostering a sense of shared ownership.
Christmas in the Gardens 2024
Support from the Ingrained Foundation has enabled the most significant garden upgrade to date. Funding from Ingrained contributed to new garden bed materials, high-quality soil, plants and resources for engaging preschool children in garden activities. These improvements have increased accessibility, expanded growing capacity and enhanced the gardens’ ability to run inclusive programs for people of all ages.
Getting Involved
Shara Community Gardens welcomes volunteers with a wide range of skills. Gardening knowledge is always appreciated, but support in areas such as event coordination, communications, marketing, small repairs or local business partnerships is equally valuable. Whether contributing on a regular basis or helping occasionally, volunteers play an essential role in strengthening both the gardens and the community.
Those interested in getting involved are invited to reach out at [email protected] to discuss how their skills and interests can support ongoing projects.
Shara Community Gardens remains entirely community-driven and continues to evolve through local passion and involvement. A growing partnership with Ocean Shores Preschool is helping introduce early education around sustainability, food and environmental care. Each improvement made within the gardens contributes to a healthier, more connected and environmentally aware community.
